Alice in Wonderland

Rated: PG
Release Date: 3/5/2010
Running Time: 1 hour, 49 minutes

The last thing 19-year-old Alice Kingsleigh wants to do is get married. So when a boring man with overbearing parents and a digestive disorder proposes in front of a crowd of people, she does the sensible thing—she excuses herself, and then accidentally falls down a rabbit hole! Thus begins Tim Burton’s adaptation of the famous Lewis Carroll children’s book, Alice in Wonderland, in which Alice finds herself in a strange, scary world with an ever-increasing cast of odd characters who seem to be expecting her. When she discovers that it’s her destiny to fight the Jabberwocky and save the day, Alice’s worst nightmares come to life . . .

What I liked about this movie:

Alice’s father seems like a cool dad. He puts her before business, he comforts her when she’s had nightmares, and he reassures her that her quirks make her special. He has a fun sense of humor and tells her he imagines “six impossible things before breakfast”—an idea that Alice holds in her heart long after he’s gone. Our Heavenly Father also happens to specialize in doing the impossible . . . in fact, “all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27).

Alice has every reason to be afraid of the menacing Bandersnatch after he attacks her. But later in the movie, she is kind to him and finds out that her enemy isn’t what he seemed to be. Jesus tells us that instead of hating our enemies, we should love them and pray for them (Matthew 5:43, 44). Sometimes following this rule of thumb turns enemies into friends!

What concerned me about this movie:

While Alice in Wonderland has been a favorite of children for generations, some people believe it’s not as innocent as it might seem.

There are obvious and subtle drug references throughout the movie. For example, Alice drinks a potion that makes her shrink and eats cake that makes her grow; Absolom, the “wise” caterpillar, sits on a psychedelic mushroom smoking what looks like marijuana from a bong. While Revelation 22:2 says the leaves on the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations, I’m sure God never intended for us to damage our lungs by smoking them—especially since our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).

At one point, Alice’s brother-in-law is caught kissing a woman who isn’t his wife—not good! (Exodus 20:14).

This movie does contain PG violence. In addition to the slaying of the Jabberwocky, there are also moments of cruelty to animals, sharp objects poked into eyeballs, animal attacks that draw blood, and of course, Tweedledee and Tweedledum—twins who just can’t stop kicking, pinching, and hitting each other. There are also some disturbing images, like skulls that float in the water.

The Red Queen is fascinated with people who have larger-than-normal body parts. These body parts include heads, noses, ears . . . and other parts that probably should have been more generously clothed, if you know what I mean.

Alice in Wonderland also contains some occult practices that don’t belong in a kids’ movie. At one point, Alice drinks brew that is made with severed human fingers. One of her final acts is to drink the blood of the Jabberwocky, mimicking a disgusting Satanic practice that God forbids (Leviticus 17:12-14). There are also some occult symbols, including checkerboards, playing cards, and one-eyed people/creatures.

I heard one careless use of God’s name.

While I’m not making recommendations for whether or not you should see this movie (that’s for you and your parents to decide!), here are some “thinking” questions:

1.     In the movie, the Red Queen has a court full of people who pretend to be something they aren’t so the queen will like them. Have you ever pretended to be something you’re not so someone would like you? Have you ever discovered that someone you thought was your friend was actually being dishonest with you? Read what the Bible says about friends in Ecclesiastes 4:10; Proverbs 17:17; Proverbs 26:28; Proverbs 22:24.

2.     When Alice finds that the Mad Hatter has been taken captive, she decides to try to rescue him. When warned against diverting from the path she is destined to be on, Alice responds, “I make my own path!” While we can “make our own path” through our choices, did you know that we are predestined by God for something really cool? Check it out in Ephesians 1:5!

3.     At one point in the movie, the Red Queen’s boyfriend asks, “Majesty, is it not better to be feared than loved?” Do you think God would rather have us fear him or love him? Look at the following texts: Psalm 67:7; Ecclesiastes 12:13; Deuteronomy 31:8; Isaiah 12:2; Deuteronomy 6:5.

4.     In Alice in Wonderland, nearly all the creatures can talk! While you’ve probably never heard your dog or cat discussing politics, the Bible does mention two different talking creatures. Check out the stories in Genesis 3 and Numbers 22. What gave each of these creatures the ability to talk?

Nickname: lost!

Nickname: rose

Nickname: godsninja770
i thought it would be like the original, but when she pulled out a sword, i knew it was diffrent

Nickname: loca
I don't know why peole alwatys have to bring religion and politics into every thing that is done in fun for children... If you think that your children should not watch things like this then do not buy or rent the movie... I beleive in god and i believe there is a devil so get over it!! The movie was great and try to use your imagination remember no one is perfect so do not acy holier than thou....

Nickname: Tasha
I really would not recommend alice in wonderland to anyone because to me it is very violent. In some points of the movie, it had me scared and i was twenty. It almost made me feel like i was watching a horror movie. Scenes like when Alice chopped the dragon head's off and it rolled down the tower's steps, her walking over the skulls' head to get to the other side of the river as well as the animal's eyes being poked out in such a manner astonishes me to how this movie could be set for children to watch. If i had a little sister, this would not be a movie I would allow her to watch. I recommend the book instead as it widens the child's imagination and it is not so graphic and have all these additions such as the cat smoking some pipe, johhny depp, etc.

Nickname: Cowgirl 4ever
ya, i dont think I would really want to wach this one!I just couldnt stand to wach something as gruesome as that sounds! thats only my opinion though, please make your own!:)

Nickname: kittykat19
it is more about the book "Through the looking glass" rather then the book ""Alice in wonderland"

Nickname: guidereader
I dont think i will be seeing that movie

Nickname: kittykat19
I thought it wasn't much like the book and it could have been better, I think you should read the book rather than watch the movie. Although the movie is rather good and has some aspects of the book the book is still better!

Nickname: delluser
Melanie didn't like much about the movie

Nickname: Awesomness!!
I don't think the guy was the Red Queen's boyfriend...I mean didn't he go and try to find Alice and bring her to the queen? I think he is more like a spy or scout...I also don't think that the caterpillar was smoking marijuana, then it would be rated PG-13.

Nickname: Ej
My mom got This movie from RedBox. Listen it was a WASTE OF A DOLLAR

Nickname: ted
Anyone familiar with the book knows the caterpillar is not smoking pot, he's smoking a hookah, which is flavored tobacco.

Nickname: rehana banana
wow, i actually wanted to watch this, but after reading your review, i have SO changed my mind! i always thought it was weird because those sorts of roles seem to attract johnny depp, but yeah, defs not seeing this one anymore :)

Nickname: legomasterforGod2

Nickname: jjjmmm
im not sure how the drink and cake have anything 2 do with druggs

Nickname: webkid
Liyah: Alice had to drink the blood of the jabberwocky because it was supposed to take her home (not that you should drink blood).

Nickname: godsson24
WOW! I've seen Alice in Wonderland and I've never thought of the movie like that!

Nickname: :P
Yuck why did they have to turn an innocent story into something like that?!

Nickname: Smiley102~
I thought the movie was o-kay. But not that good. The part that Alice had to drink the jabberwocky's blood was disgusting!!

Nickname: horselover396
first of all, nice escape from that weird husband. But i dont really like the bizzare Jonny Depp stuff. Nah not for me.

Nickname: Emmy4Christ
I haven't seen this movie, but your description tells me that it is definitely occult. I mean, seriously! What the green grass is wrong with people!?

Nickname: km1234
i really want to watch that movie i mean ya it does seem a little strange but still....it sounds good

Nickname: dandy
I loved the movie.

Nickname: Jesse1112
Wow. That certainly is an interesting twist in the original. I don't think I want to see it.

Nickname: LovLue
Cuit Movie, but when I saw the cover I thought it was going to be like the orignal. But it turned out to be more like a return to Wonder land.

Nickname: nickname
I saw a bit and i realized that it all has to do with sitanicism. I wouldn't recomend this video to anyone. However i might recomend the first edition because it is less but i wouldn't recomend it either.

Nickname: no good at spelling
I watched it I did not like most of It you know? I have see worse though.

Nickname: MoMo
I have seen this movie and it was very questionable. I mean I was suprised at the evil strange thingsI saw in this movie so we will probably not buy it on DVD. The cartoon is waaaay more innocent.

Nickname: Adri05
I was thinking of seeing the movie i think that its stupid but some people like it i might see it to know what everyone is talkin about but so far i still stand with my statement but if i watch it then i'll tell you what i think about i still think that the producers killed the original story of the little story.

Nickname: friendofman
ok, the book seemed good, but the movie is way diff just look at the trailer so weird! i thought it was meant to be a childrens story?

Nickname: iluvcheese
i think that this movie is inappropriate and scary. I wanted to see it but now I'm sure.

Nickname: Chrissy
I actually LOVE that movie!!! I do agree with a lot of what you were saying, and if I was Allice, I SO would not have drank that blood. First of all, God says not to and second of all it's just plain NASTY. But I wouldn't disrecommend the movie!

Nickname: ja
the movie sounds ssssssssssssssssssoooooooooooooooooo dumb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nickname: scottyboy
just some ansewrs to some questions: Liyah: do you remeber when the Mad Hatter said to Alice when she was about to drink the Jabberwoky blood," You could stay." The blood was sopposed to take her home.

Nickname: Sa
I don't know about this one... I never really showed much intrest in the book or the movie...

Nickname: thecoolkid
Nice review of Alice in Wonderland.

Nickname: DJ
the satanic practice that u mentioned, the one about drinking blood, isnt that wat native americans would do after killing their opponents? i think its more shamanistic than anything. and im not sure how playing cards and checkerboards are occult.

Nickname: jonny
this movie is just a copy of a book

Nickname: What do you think?
If you are a person prone to immitating things shown on tv or the movie screen, then don't wacht it .If not the go ahead but it is all FAKE!

Nickname: Samantha
My mom says that Lewis Carrol was most likely on opium, also ruling out meth, they didn't know how to make it back then. This is what drugs do to people! Not cool!!!! I'm also not gonna watch it.

Nickname: iloveyouguide!!
This movie looks really stupid and animated and not worth your time to watch it. I think they are trying to change the old story where Alice was a little girl and make some modern-freakish "entertaining" movie. I would choose to totally NOT watch it. I would advise you not to too.

Nickname: Maria
I don't want to see Alice in Wonderland because just on the trailer it looks just so weird and satanic. So the answer from me is no.

Nickname: S.G
I felt uncomfortable about this movie, and after reading the review, I would never want to watch it. I don't like the fact that all the movies these days seem to be about fantasy and violence. This movie sounds like it is filled with things that I would not want to see!

Nickname: layla
do movie was AWsome! i really liked and enjoyed Johnny Depp's acting! it was definitely exciting and captivating :) i'd love to watch it again actually :DDDD

Nickname: me
sounds ssssssssssssssstttttttttttttttttuuuuuuuuuupppppppppiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidddddddd besides my parents would never let me see it!!!!!!!!!!

Nickname: ej
my sister wanted to see the movie but i thought it was stupid and werid. Now she doesn't want to see it. PS:yessssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nickname: jd hates this movie
(two words) dumb movie

Nickname: Skeptic Dude
Actually Lewis Carrol wrote Alice in wonderland after having a lucid dream. I'm usually skeptical on these films but i think the sign are clear that we're better off reading the book then watching this messed up piece of Hollywood fluff.

Nickname: Liyah
I have a question. About Alice having to drink the blood of the Jabberwocky. Did she actually drink its blood? Why did they want her to do it? Was it supposed to keep the people of Wonderland safe? I know I wouldn't want to drink anything or anyone's blood.

Nickname: (I AM A GIRL) :)
I never watched the movie or read the book. It sounds pretty scary to me. ( skulls creep me out!!)

Nickname: Movie Watcher
I actually saw the movie on DVD. I would give the movie 8 out of 10 stars, and Rachel did present points which make the movie not agree with the Word of God. This movie is quite strange, and for some reason, felt depressed right after watching it. Well, if you want to see it, go see it. Overall, it's not a bad movie, but remember to make the wise decisions stated in the Bible.

Nickname: AC Jones
I really don't think that Adventists should be going to the movies in the first place. But some Adventist don't believe in that. Why not?

Nickname: Cally
Wow. Thanks. I was planning on watching the movie but reading this changed my mind. Thanks alot

Nickname: iheartJesus
this movie is based on Alice's second visit to wonderland. that is why if some of you read the book the movie might seem a little different. they did make a movie based on Alice's first visit when she was a little girl. that movie is very old; it is a cartoon that Disney made a while back. i saw this movie its really weird. i wouldn't say that it is creepy but it is really strange. it wasn't a very good movie.

Nickname: asladon101
I would REALLY want to see this if if it wasn't a Tim Burton-Johnny Depp film. It seems Tim's goal in life is to make Johnny as creepy as possible. Save your money for this one guys.

Nickname: lis13
the movie sounds really stupid (and pointless, like RachelfromGuide said.) Did you know that Lewis Carroll (the author) was high on some drug (either cocaine, meth or marijuana, I have no clue) while he wrote the story? I dont' feel like watching the movie but my friends have and they say its dumb and freakish. Nah, this movie is not for me.

Nickname: RachelfromGuide
I just read the book, which I thought was funny but pretty weird, and sort of pointless. I didn't see anything very godly in it that I can remember. The movie looks creepy compared to the book. It sounds like they changed it a lot because in the book Alice is a little girl, not 19 years old. I don't think I'd want to watch this movie.
