About Guide

Rachel Whitaker, Associate Editor

Where were you born? Charlotte, Michigan. It's pronounced shar-LOT (not SHAR-let like the city in North Carolina).

What was your first job? The summer after I graduated from high school I worked part-time for the sheriff's department. I was a secretary in the property room, which is where they keep evidence for crimes, confiscated guns and drugs, lost purses, etc. A highlight was getting to drive a patrol car across town. When I wasn't working there, I was hobnobbing with politicians and helping frustrated citizens as an unpaid intern for a U.S. congressman.

What is your favorite veggie food item? Haystacks.

When you were Guide age, what did you want to be when you grew up? An artist. Fortunately, I soon discovered that I had stronger talents in other areas--such as writing.

Do you speak any other languages? If so, which one(s)? Hablo espaņol bastante bien. (I speak Spanish pretty well.)

What is your favorite clothing store? Secondhand stores, because they're cheap!

Would you ever go back and relive your teenage years? Probably not. Life has gotten better as I have gotten older.

What's your favorite Bible story? I really like the stories of Esther and Joseph. Both of them have a lot of drama, emotion, and suspense.

What is your favorite Guide story? Voyager! (It's also a favorite of many visitors to this Web site. Click to go to the Voyager page and read this exciting series.)

What's it really like working for Guide? If you knew how much fun it is, you might be jealous, so I'd better not tell you.
